Learn Tarot for Beginners: Week 1 – Welcome to Your Tarot Journey
Welcome to Week One
'Every tarot reader starts with curiosity. Every expert was once a beginner.'
Welcome to the first week of your Learn Tarot with Psychic Sisters** journey.
This week isn’t about memorising all 78 tarot cards or trying to learn every meaning by heart. Instead, it’s about discovering the magic of tarot, connecting with your Oceanic Tarot deck and beginning to trust the most important tool you will ever use as a tarot reader: 'your intuition'
Many people believe tarot is mysterious or difficult to learn. In reality, tarot is a beautiful language of symbols, stories, colours and intuitive messages that anyone can understand with patience and practice.
Each tarot card contains layers of meaning. The traditional interpretation gives you a foundation, but the imagery, colours, symbols and emotions you notice can help you uncover a message that feels personal and relevant to the reading.
By the end of this week, you will:
- Understand what tarot is and where it came from.
- Learn how a tarot deck is structured.
- Begin recognising common colours and symbols.
- Learn how to connect with your Oceanic Tarot deck.
- Understand how your intuition communicates with you.
- Perform your first tarot spread.
- Begin building a meaningful relationship with your cards.
Remember, every experienced tarot reader once stood exactly where you are today.
What Is Tarot?
Tarot is a deck of 78 illustrated cards, each rich with symbolism, colour, emotion and meaning.
For hundreds of years, tarot has been used as a tool for guidance, reflection and personal growth.
Contrary to popular belief, tarot isn’t simply about predicting a fixed future.
Instead, tarot can help us understand ourselves more deeply. It encourages us to pause, reflect, recognise opportunities, navigate challenges and make empowered decisions.
Think of tarot as a conversation with your intuition.
The cards don’t tell you what you must do. They help you look at your situation from a fresh perspective.
They may highlight an emotion you have been ignoring, a pattern that keeps repeating, an opportunity you haven’t noticed or an inner strength you need to trust.
Every reading is an opportunity to learn, grow and believe in yourself a little more.
A Brief History of Tarot
The earliest tarot cards appeared in Italy during the fifteenth century, where they were originally created as beautifully illustrated playing cards for noble families.
Over time, people began to recognise the powerful themes and symbolism within the artwork. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, tarot had become closely connected with spirituality, divination, meditation and self-discovery.
Today, people around the world use tarot to explore their emotions, strengthen their intuition, gain clarity and support personal growth.
Tarot has continued to evolve, with modern decks using different artistic styles, cultures, landscapes and themes.
Although the artwork may change from deck to deck, the deeper structure and archetypal meanings remain familiar.
Understanding the Structure of Tarot
A complete tarot deck contains 78 cards, divided into two main sections:
The Major Arcana
The Major Arcana contains '22 cards', beginning with The Fool and ending with The World.
These cards represent important life lessons, spiritual growth, personal transformation and significant turning points.
When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it can suggest that the situation carries deeper meaning or may have an important influence on your personal journey.
Examples include:
- The Fool - new beginnings, possibility and trust.
- The Magician - confidence, skills and personal power.
- The Empress - creativity, abundance and nurturing.
- The Hermit - reflection, inner wisdom and solitude.
- Death - transformation, endings and renewal.
- The Star - healing, hope and inspiration.
- The World - completion, achievement and fulfilment.
You will explore the Major Arcana in greater detail during Week Two.
The Minor Arcana
The Minor Arcana contains **56 cards** and focuses on everyday life, relationships, thoughts, emotions, work, decisions and practical experiences.
It is divided into four suits:
- Cups - feelings, love, relationships and intuition.
- Wands - energy, passion, confidence and creativity.
- Swords - thoughts, communication, truth and challenges.
- Pentacles - work, money, health, security and the physical world.
Each suit contains cards numbered from Ace to Ten, followed by four Court Cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King.
You will explore the Minor Arcana in greater detail during Week Three.
Meet Your Oceanic Tarot
Throughout this course, we will be using the Oceanic Tarot, a deck I created to reflect the wisdom, beauty and ever-changing rhythm of the sea.
The ocean is constantly moving.
Some days, the waters are calm.
On other days, the tides shift unexpectedly.
Life is much the same.
Every card in the Oceanic Tarot reminds us that change is natural, intuition is our compass and every experience offers an opportunity to learn and grow.
As you explore your deck, notice the colours, sea creatures, landscapes, facial expressions and symbols within the artwork.
Before reaching for the guidebook, allow yourself to respond naturally to what you see.
You may notice:
- A colour that immediately catches your attention.
- A sea creature that feels significant.
- A character looking towards or away from something.
- Calm or turbulent water.
- Light breaking through darkness.
- An object being held, offered, hidden or released.
- A feeling that arises before you understand why.
All these details can contribute to the meaning of the card.
Getting to Know Your Deck
Before learning the traditional meanings, spend some quiet time becoming familiar with your deck.
Hold the cards in your hands.
Notice how they feel.
Shuffle them slowly.
Look through each card without trying to memorise anything.
Simply observe.
Pay attention to any card that makes you pause.
A card might attract you because you love it, dislike it, feel curious about it or find it slightly uncomfortable.
Every reaction can be meaningful.
Choose one card that immediately catches your attention.
Ask yourself:
- What drew me to this card?
- How does it make me feel?
- What was my first impression?
- Which colours stand out?
- What symbols do I notice?
- Is the image calm, active, joyful or challenging?
- Where is the character looking?
- What appears to be happening?
- If this card could speak, what would it say?
- How might this card connect with my life today?
There are no right or wrong answers.
This is your intuition beginning to speak.
## Reading the Symbols in a Tarot Card
Tarot symbolism helps us move beyond memorised keywords and understand the story within each card.
A symbol may have a traditional meaning, but it can also hold a personal meaning for you.
For example, a dog might traditionally represent loyalty and companionship. However, it could also remind you of a beloved pet, a childhood memory or a need for protection.
Always consider both the traditional symbolism and your personal response.
Water
Water is often connected with:
- Emotions.
- Intuition.
- Healing.
- Relationships.
- The subconscious mind.
Calm water may suggest emotional peace or clarity.
Rough or turbulent water may represent emotional uncertainty, change or feelings that are difficult to control.
The Moon
The Moon can symbolise:
- Intuition.
- Dreams.
- Mystery.
- Hidden information.
- Emotional cycles.
- Uncertainty.
It may encourage you to trust your instincts while allowing more information to reveal itself.
The Sun

- Healing.

Animals and Sea Creatures
Animals may represent instinctive qualities, emotional needs or personality traits.
A dolphin may suggest playfulness, communication and intelligence.
A turtle may represent patience, protection and steady progress.
A fish may be connected with emotions, intuition or something emerging from the subconscious.
Consider what the animal means to you personally as well as its traditional symbolism.
Paths and Roads
A path may symbolise:
- A decision.
- A journey.
- A new direction.
- Personal growth.
- An unknown future.
Notice whether the path appears clear, hidden, straight or difficult to follow.
Doors, Gates and Archways
These can represent:
- New opportunities.
- Transitions.
- Moving from one stage of life to another.

An open door may suggest possibility, while a closed door may indicate a delay, boundary or need for another approach.
Mountains
Mountains can symbolise:
- Challenges.
- Ambition.
- Achievement.
- Strength.
- A long-term goal.
A distant mountain may represent something you are working towards.
Light and Darkness
Light may represent truth, awareness, hope or understanding.
Darkness may represent the unknown, uncertainty, fear or something that has not yet been fully understood.
Neither is automatically positive or negative. Darkness can also offer rest, reflection and the opportunity to look within.
Understanding Colour in Tarot
Colours can help you understand the emotional energy of a card.
You do not need to memorise colour meanings. Start by noticing how each colour makes you feel.

Black
Black can represent:
- Mystery.
- Protection.
- The unknown.
- Endings.
- Hidden potential.
The same colour may feel different depending on the other images around it.
A bright red sunrise may feel energising, while a dark red sky may feel intense or warning.
Always consider the whole card.
Understanding Numbers in Tarot
Numbers can add another layer of meaning to a card.
You will explore this more deeply later in the course, but these simple associations can help you begin:
- Aces or Ones - beginnings, opportunities and potential.
- Twos -choices, balance and partnership.
- Threes - growth, creativity and collaboration.
- Fours - stability, foundations and structure.
- Fives - change, challenge and adjustment.
- Sixes - harmony, support and movement forward.
- Sevens - reflection, assessment and inner development.
- Eights - progress, movement, strength and mastery.
- Nines - wisdom, fulfilment and nearing completion.
- Tens - completion, transition and the end of a cycle.
Numbers should not be read in isolation. Combine them with the suit, imagery and feeling of the card.
For example, a Five of Cups may represent an emotional challenge, while a Five of Pentacles may relate to insecurity in the material or physical world.

Connecting with Your Zodiac Card
Spend a few quiet moments studying your zodiac significator card.
Ask yourself:
- What was my first reaction to this card?
- Do I feel connected to it?
- Which colours or symbols stand out?
- Which qualities of my star sign can I recognise within it?
- Does the card reflect how I see myself?
- Is there a quality within the card that I would like to develop?
- What message might this card have for me now?
Write your thoughts in your tarot journal.
Return to this card at the end of the four-week course and notice whether your understanding has changed.
Understanding Intuition
People often ask me:
How do I know if it’s my intuition?
Intuition rarely arrives with a loud voice.
It often appears as:
- A feeling.
- A first impression.
- A word.
- A colour.
- A memory.
- A physical sensation.
- An image in your mind.
- A sudden connection.
- A quiet inner knowing.
You might look at a card and immediately think of a person, conversation or situation.
You may feel drawn towards one symbol before noticing anything else.
You might sense that a card feels hopeful, even if you do not yet know its traditional meaning.
These first responses are valuable.
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is doubting or dismissing their first impression.
Very often, your first thought is your most intuitive.
The more you practise, the easier it becomes to recognise the difference between intuition and overthinking.
Intuition often feels calm, simple and immediate.
Overthinking usually arrives afterwards, bringing doubt, fear or a long list of possibilities.
Combining Intuition with Traditional Meanings
A confident tarot reader learns to use both intuition and traditional knowledge.
The traditional meaning gives you a foundation.
Your intuition helps you understand how that meaning applies to the person, question or situation in front of you.
For example, The Hermit traditionally represents reflection and inner wisdom.
In one reading, it may suggest taking time alone.
In another, it may represent seeking advice from a wise teacher.
In a relationship reading, it may suggest that someone needs space to understand their feelings.
The card remains The Hermit, but the message changes depending on the question, surrounding cards and intuitive impressions.
When you turn over a card, try this simple process:
1. Notice your first feeling.
2. Study the colours and symbols.
3. Describe what appears to be happening.
4. Recall the traditional meaning.
5. Connect the card with the question.
6. Put the message into your own words.
You do not need to sound mysterious or complicated.
A clear, simple message is often the most powerful.
Creating Your Tarot Ritual
Before every reading, take a few moments to prepare yourself.
You might like to:
- Light a candle.
- Burn your favourite Psychic Sisters incense.
- Hold a Clear Quartz or Selenite crystal.
- Take three slow, deep breaths.
- Set an intention for your reading.
- Place your phone on silent.
- Sit somewhere comfortable.
- Keep your tarot journal nearby.
These simple rituals help quiet the mind and create a peaceful space in which to connect with your cards.
Before shuffling, you might say:
“I ask for clear, positive and helpful guidance.”
Or:
"Please help me understand what I most need to know today."
Remember:
- The ritual isn’t for the cards.
- It’s for you.
- Your Week One Tarot Spread
- The Mirror Spread
This simple two-card spread will help you connect with your intuition and begin understanding how cards work together.
Card One Card Two
🃏 🃏
Card One - Where Am I Right Now?
This card represents your current physical, emotional, mental or spiritual energy.
Ask:
- How am I feeling at this moment?
- What energy am I carrying?
- What may be influencing me?
- Is there something I need to acknowledge?
Card Two – What Energy Will Support Me This Week?
This card offers guidance for the week ahead.
Ask:
- What quality should I focus on?
- What will help me move forward?
- What do I need to understand?
- How can I support myself as I begin my tarot journey?
Reading the Two Cards Together
Before opening the guidebook, place both cards side by side.
Ask yourself:
- Which card draws my attention first?
- What colours appear in both cards?
- Are the cards calm, active or emotional?
- Do any symbols repeat?
- Are the characters facing towards or away from each other?
- Does one card appear to answer the other?
- What story are the two cards telling?
- How does Card Two support or challenge Card One?
Imagine that the cards are two scenes from the same story.
Card One shows where you are.
Card Two shows what may help you.
Write down your first impressions before checking the traditional meanings.
Example of Reading the Mirror Spread
Imagine you draw:
Card One – The Hermit
Card Two – Strength
The Hermit may suggest that you are currently feeling reflective, withdrawn or in need of quiet time.
Strength may encourage you to approach the week with patience, confidence and self-compassion.
Together, the cards might say:
“Give yourself the space to reflect, but do not mistake quietness for weakness. Trust your inner strength and move at your own pace.”
Your interpretation may be different, and that is perfectly acceptable.
The aim is to create a message that connects the cards with your life.
Starting Your Tarot Journal
Your tarot journal will become an important part of your learning.
Writing down your impressions helps you recognise patterns, develop confidence and see how your understanding grows over time.
For each card, record:
- The date.
- The question you asked.
- The name of the card.
- Your first impression.
- Colours and symbols you noticed.
- The traditional meaning.
- Your personal interpretation.
- How the message related to your day.
- Anything that became clearer later.
You may find that a card makes more sense at the end of the day than it did in the morning.
This is one of the most valuable ways to learn tarot.
Your Daily Card Practice
Each morning, shuffle your deck and ask:
"What energy should I be aware of today?"
Choose one card.
Before checking the guidebook, write down:
- Three words that describe the card.
- The first symbol you noticed.
- The strongest colour.
- The emotion the card creates.
- One possible message.
At the end of the day, return to the card.
Ask:
- How did this card appear in my day?
- Did I understand the message differently later?
- What did I learn?
- Was my first impression accurate?
Do not worry if the connection isn’t immediately clear.
Some cards become meaningful over time.
Week One Practice
This week, I would like you to:
✔ Spend ten minutes each day with your tarot deck.
✔ Pull one card every morning.
✔ Study the symbols, colours and numbers.
✔ Find and explore your zodiac significator card.

Jayne’s Tip
*“Your tarot deck is like a new friend. The more time you spend together, the stronger your connection becomes. Don’t rush to memorise meanings. Instead, become curious. Notice the artwork, the symbols and the emotions each card brings. That’s where the real magic begins.”*
Ocean Wisdom
The ocean never rushes.
It moves with the rhythm of the tides, knowing exactly when to flow and when to rest.
Learning tarot is the same.
You do not need to understand everything at once.
Each time you look at a card, you will notice something new.
Each time you trust your first impression, your confidence will grow.
Be patient with yourself.
Trust the journey.
Your intuition will become stronger with every card you turn.
